Cajun Nights

John Francois

Following the events in Cajun Fire, Marc Delaterre has barely survived the havoc of the Civil War in south Louisiana. Now he begins experiencing the evils of Reconstruction. His son Duc has joined the Knights of the White Camellia. This clandestine organization targets carpetbaggers and the hapless freedmen who have become political pawns in the hands of the hated Republicans.

Duc, as a Knight, is involved in the acts of brutality, especially against the freedmen. In doing so, he discovers in himself a flaw so terrible that he cannot tell anyone, nor live with it. Marc, learning of his son’s actions, is horrified and decides to root out the evil in the boy. In trying to help his son, Marc reveals information to him that slowly begins to destroy Duc.

Marc Delaterre comes to Louisiana from France in 1848 believing that the accumulation of material wealth will give him the independence he never had in his own country. After exhaustive struggles against the fevers and heat of South Louisiana, and against his sworn enemy, his father-in-law, he wrests himself a plantation to begin his fight toward independence.

Facing him is Louisiana’s move toward secession, which he strongly opposes. When the war ultimately comes to the bayou country, he does what he has to do to protect his plantation from its ravages. He collaborates with the enemy and arms his ex-slaves to defend themselves from a marauding lawless element, the jay hawkers.

In the final, tumultuous month of the Civil War, when all is in chaos around him, when he thinks he has safely guided his plantation through the destructions of the war, he has to make a desperate choice when he faces the jay hawkers to settle a blood feud.

The March

John Francois

From the moment the Acadian exile, Henri Pitre, learns that England and Spain are at war, vengeance begins to consume him. Memories of his family’s forced deportation from Acadie by the British in 1755 reawaken the pain of the loss of his mother and younger brother and kindle his desire for retribution.

His Louisiana militia unit, the Opelousas Post, is ordered to join the Spanish Governor-General, Bernardo de Galvez, who, with his small army, is engaged in a desperate gamble to surprise and attack the British forces at Baton Rouge. The men of the Opelousas Post fight their way through the flooded Atchafalaya swamp, surging bayous, and poisonous snakes in the torrid heat of a Louisiana summer to rendezvous on time with Galvez.

Once there, and facing the hated English, Henri has to come to terms with a betrayal and a sacred promise he had made to his dying father.
